Silver Mountain School of Hotel Mangement is a brainchild of four like-minded hotel educators. Silver Mountain School takes pride in giving world-class hospitality education offering first ever four years Bachelors Degree in International Hospitality and Tourism Management with affiliation from Queen Margaret University, the UK in Nepal. Silver Mountain SHM’s programs are equivalent and approved by the Curriculum Development Centre of Tribhuvan University (T.U.) for the first time in Nepal. Besides, academics, Silver Mountain School of Hotel Management also introduced Coffee University in Nepal as ‘Universita Del Café, Nepal’.

Coffee Making Training

The scale of the “coffee phenomenon” is so huge that it can be compared to the most widely consumed drink in the world: water. Just think that in one year, we consume 242 thousand million liters of bottled water and 161 thousand million liters of coffee. It is a center of excellence created to promote, support and communicate the culture of quality coffee worldwide, through training. The need for coffee is not far behind the primary necessity of drinking water. According to a recent research, 2.6 billion cups of coffee are consumed in a day. It’s never been easier to choose quality. Coffee has always been rare and a cut above the rest beverage worldwide. But in countries likes Nepal or Bhutan, where tea used to be more preferred, coffee has become another prevalent beverage over the years. One of the reasons most likely being the thronging tourists from all over the world, who knows well the taste of premium, finely brewed specialty coffees and high demands the need for this artisanal, addictive beverage. It is a special meeting place where not only coffee and hospitality professionals but also enthusiasts, people who are curious about coffee and aspiring coffee connoisseurs can share in the passion for knowledge that distinguishes illy caffè, a leader in Italian espresso for over 80 years. The requirement for espresso isn’t a long way behind the essential need of drinking water. As per an ongoing examination, 6 billion cups of espressos are consumed every day around the world. The inspiration of Università del caffè (University of Coffee) came from the important vocation, that illy coffee has always supported and emphasized on, which is the promotion of coffee culture in the world. Coffee Expert is a professional journey into the world of coffee that provides a complete in-depth view, both theoretical and practical. The course is a complete detailed program, which includes the processing, and transformation of coffee, providing the rules for extracting, recognizing and judging a perfect espresso. Course length: 5 days

  • MASTER BARISTA

The master barista class is the most advanced among all the courses UDC currently offers and is designed for professional baristas or coffee technicians led by a professional barista from illy caffè, you will learn modern techniques and receive more detailed information regarding coffee and also experience more hands-on preparation training. These classes delight the ability as well as your taste buds. Course length: 3 days Enrollment Requirement: Barista experience (minimum 3 years)  

  • LATTE ART CLASS

This is one of the most interesting things in coffee. Latte means ‘Milk’ in Italian, so it is the art of milk. The latte art class, as the name suggests, is the class where you get to create your own beautiful art in the cup. You will get a chance to test your pouring skills and create different milk patterns and designs on your cappuccino and latte under the guidance of our UDC instructors. Course length: 1 day

  • SLOW PREPARATION CLASS

The slow preparation class includes the fundamentals of the pour-over coffee brewing method, coffee-to-water ratio, including grinder settings, water temperature, and pouring technique.  Course length: 1 day

  •  ESPRESSO EXCELLENCY

Coffee lover courses are discovery activities that are designed for people who are passionate about coffee and would like to know more about what is in their cup.  This short course that we are providing is dedicated to all coffee lovers and connoisseurs, which offers you a conventional view of coffee, culture and its different preparation methods. Course length: 1 day

  • TAILOR-MADE COURSE

We recognize the fact that every barista has their own signature skill that makes them unique. Imagine a course that is tailor-made only for you. The syllabus is established and agreed upon with the consultant on the basis of the check-up, and that develops the specific activities to be followed onwards the course. The main aim of this short program will be to focus on the winning features/highlights and working around to reduce the weaknesses through training and education to satisfy your specific needs. Course length: depends upon the content

  • COFFEE LOVERS COURSE

Coffee lover courses are discovery activities that are designed for people who are passionate about coffee and would like to know more about what is in their cup. This short course that we are providing is dedicated to all coffee lovers and connoisseurs, which offers you a conventional view of coffee, culture and its different preparation methods. Course length: 1 day

  • BASIC BARISTA

This basic course is aimed at all beginner level baristas which provides a generalized view of the coffee world in following the journey of coffee from plant till the moment it lands in a cup. You will not only learn about the importance of espresso and its extraction but the basic milk texturing and art of coffee. Besides these, you will regain basic knowledge of the coffee machine, how it operates and its maintenance. If you want to become perfect in the art of the bar profession, you need the necessary knowledge, creativity, and skills. This course also includes other basic preparation methods such as slow-preparation of coffee, Mocha preparation, and various others. Course length: 5 days   The Università del discovery courses are aimed at managers and owners of bars, restaurants and hotels, tourism entrepreneurs, and groups and associations wishing to offer their customers the opportunity to enjoy a high-profile learning experience firsthand. The proposed courses can be held in any type of setting – from a café or bar to a conference hall – and they aim to help people understand, discover and verify what “quality” actually means in the world of coffee. The educational approach, designed to make the technical jargon accessible and user-friendly, seeks to engage the participants with the tasting of the products and various preparations. Sula Jatra Event (Sula Wine Fest)

The Sula Wine Festival was held on 12th May 2018 (happens once in every two years) in Kathmandu. The event was a big hit among the young crowd with more than 500 visitors at the fest. UDC is in the market among such crowds who are interested in coffee along with wine.

Celebrity Coffee Session

On June 1st 2018, UDC, Silver Mountain SHM, hosted a celebrity coffee session with Mr. Swoopna Suman with 10 of his lucky fans for a meet and greet. The fun-filled event started with a quick coffee lesson by UDC, Silver Mountain School and slow preparation demos and tastings using the single origin coffee from Ethiopia and Brazil, followed by latte art challenges where participants got to make their own latte with the guidance of the illy baristas. The event ended with a Polaroid session, sponsored by Vespa Nepal, where the fans individually got an autographed copy of their Polaroids with Mr. Suman. Since the higher levels of qualities are achieved in the production, transformation, and promotion of coffee, UDC makes sure that their suppliers, employees and customer’s technical and operational support, through its companionship in the market.
